Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS)
High-Resolution Structural Deformation Monitoring
What is DSS?
Distributed Strain Sensing uses Brillouin scattering to measure deformation and strain along long lengths of optical fiber. It provides detailed strain profiles essential for structural health monitoring across bridges, dams, buildings, tunnels, and geotechnical sites.
How DSS Works
When laser light interacts with the fiber under strain, the frequency of Brillouin-scattered light shifts. The interrogation unit analyzes this shift to calculate strain and temperature changes with high accuracy.
Key Features
Spatial resolution 50 cm – 1 m
Measures strain with high accuracy
Long-distance monitoring up to 10–40 km
Detects micro-deformation, cracks, bending, settlement
Reliable in harsh environments
Works with both embedded and surface-mounted fibers
Applications
Bridges & Flyovers
