Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensing System
High-Precision Optical Point Sensing for Strain & Temperature
What is FBG?
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing is a high-precision optical point-sensing technology used to measure strain and temperature at specific, critical locations along an optical fiber. FBG sensors consist of microscopic periodic gratings inscribed inside the fiber core. These gratings reflect a specific wavelength of light, known as the Bragg wavelength, which shifts in response to changes in strain or temperature. By tracking this wavelength shift, highly accurate physical measurements can be obtained in real time. FBG sensing is especially suited for applications where localized, ultra-accurate measurements are required, complementing distributed sensing technologies.
How FBG Works
A broadband light source is launched into the optical fiber containing multiple FBG sensors. Each FBG reflects a unique wavelength corresponding to its position. When strain or temperature changes occur, the reflected Bragg wavelength shifts, the interrogator precisely measures this shift, and the change is converted into accurate strain or temperature data. Folium's FS-FBG Interrogator uses a highly stable light source and a broadband spectrometer to achieve extremely fine wavelength resolution, enabling reliable and repeatable measurements even in demanding environments.
